Electrical characterization of alkane monolayers using micro-transfer printing : tunneling and molecular transport

چکیده
We present the characterization of a decanedithiol monolayer using a technique which is based on micro-transfer printing. This technique allows us to contact molecular monolayers on the scale of 100μm2 without producing electrical shorts between the metallic contacts. This opens the possibility to characterize the behavior of metal–molecule contacts on a large ensemble. Electrical measurements of the decanes show that two main transport mechanisms dominate conduction through this monolayer, tunneling between the electrodes and transport through electric states of the molecules. In our setup, tunneling is temperature dependent, because a length change of the molecules causes changes of the effective tunneling width.

Intrinsic Electronic Conduction Mechanisms in Self-Assembled Monolayers
A review on the mechanisms and characterization methods of molecular electronic transport is presented. Using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols in a nanometer scale device structure, tunneling is unambiguously demonstrated as the main conduction mechanism for large bandgap SAMs, exhibiting well-known temperature and length dependencies. Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy e...

Objective(s): Although viral vectors are considered efficient gene transfer agents, their board application has been limited by toxicity, immunogenicity, mutagenicity and small gene carrying capacity. Non-viral vectors are safe but they suffer from low transfection efficiency. In the present study, polyallylamine (PAA) in two molecular weights (15 and 65 kDa) was modified by alkane derivatives ...
متن کاملThe rate of charge tunneling through self-assembled monolayers is insensitive to many functional group substitutions.
At its conception, the field of molecular electronics promised to provide the ability to engineer the rate of charge transport through the design of the molecular structure of electronic junctions. The hypothesis was that the electronic and geometrical structure of molecules in a junction would have a significant and predictable effect on the rate and mechanism of charge transport through their...

lar substrate is tricky, since the spin-coating solution does not wet the substrate and flies off the rotating surface. Since the OTS pattern after the lift-off technique is the inverse of the originally stamped ODT pattern, the sample in Figure 1d features macroscopically an oxide surface with printed OTS stripes on a micrometer lateral scale. Beyond the specific advantages of our technique, s...
متن کاملElectron tunneling through alkanedithiol self-assembled monolayers in large-area molecular junctions.
The electrical transport through self-assembled monolayers of alkanedithiols was studied in large-area molecular junctions and described by the Simmons model [Simmons JG (1963) J Appl Phys 34:1793-1803 and 2581-2590] for tunneling through a practical barrier, i.e., a rectangular barrier with the image potential included. The strength of the image potential depends on the value of the dielectric...
